If you’ve been looking for a car, truck, or SUV lately, then I believe you’ve seen the multitude of vehicles sporting shiny new auto navigation systems included in this or that offer upgrade. These GPS systems are delightfully handy when you find yourself stuck in traffic that’s moving slower than the snail which just passed by or the roads are closing due to nasty weather or traffic pile ups. The truth of the matter is they can come in every bit as handy when faced with every day driving if you allow them to be.
Many people, unfortunately, buy these systems because they appear to be a good idea at the time and then never really get their money’s worth. Very few investments in technology are worthy if you aren’t going to at least get your money’s worth. Auto nav systems are great when you find yourself lost in the woods, so to speak, but they can help you find various paths when traffic is active on your traditional drive to the food market store.
They can help you stay away from roads that have been shut down for maintenance, as well as find a quick way around work that’s being done along your route. These DEVICE devices can also assist you in finding shortest routes to events and other destinations that you will not have been conscious existed before and they aren’t commanding nearly the amount they brought in a mere two years ago. In other words, this convenience is becoming much more reasonable.
Something you must keep in mind when considering a new car or a new auto navigation system for an existing car is how much you think you’ll in fact use your system. Even if you save it for emergency use alone, it’s quite possible that in an emergency this great GPS device will be well worth ten times what you originally paid for it because it could save a job, time, or even lives (particularly if you’re lost and searching for a hospital). For me, it’s hard to put a price tag on the convenience owning a GPS device like this would bring but it’s definitely worth the current cost. Keep in mind that when these kind of systems initial hit the market $1, 000 was on the ultra low end.
If you never use your GPS system and only get it because it seems cool, then you definitely will not be getting your money’s worth. Technology is only good when it’s valuable to someone. Sitting there unused it’s supporting no one and is basically a waste of dollars. On the different end of the range, however, you’ve got individuals including me. By ‘like me’ I mean those of us who could get helplessly lost and flustered finding our way out of the driveway on dark and moonless nights.
I use my automobile navigation system like an extra pair of eyes. My GPS system is not really the top of the line system that advertises an uncanny capability to help you parallel park your car, but it’s nice enough to help me discover where I am and how to get where I’m going after that. For me, that is simply enough to be worthy of every penny.
Beyond that, my navigation system would not need tricky folds or my pulling off onto the shoulder in order to read. It speaks to me (without losing its temper) and informs me where to go; I like that about my system. I don’t know about the rest of you, but map reading is not a thing I’ve ever been gifted at. That simple fact may have a little to do with the very fact that it was not something I was ever previously terribly interested in.
Couple that with my very poor attention to landmarks and I was a driving disaster. Literally, I got lost at least once, if not twice a week before making the move into the modern world of navigation. I have absolutely no regrets and while I can’t promise you’ll love your auto nav system just as much as I love mine (all systems aren’t created equal), I can pretty much bet that your driving, particularly on long road trips, will go much more smoothly than without one.
